The world's first full panoramic museum: Panorama 1453 History Museum

The conquest of Istanbul is one of the important events that changed the course of history. This event that brought a new order to the world; It has enriched Istanbul with its architecture, art and culture. It is important to understand the past, present and the spirit of the conquest of the city in order to get to know this cultural heritage, which was formed with the contributions of different civilizations. Panorama 1453 History Museum was established for this purpose. The area where the Thrace Bus Station was located in the recent past has been transformed into a large green park with the relocation of the bus station. Panorama 1453 History Museum was opened to visitors in 2009 in this place decorated with trees and flowers, named Topkapı Culture Park.

The museum, which was established near the Edirnekapı, Topkapı and Silivrikapı walls, where the most important moments of the conquest were experienced, next to the gate where Fatih entered the city; It has the distinction of being the first full panoramic museum in the world and has been hosting its guests with the rightful pride of this title since the day it was opened.

You are invited to the conquest of Istanbul

Imagine a 360-degree picture without borders within a 3,000 square meter area. The most basic feature of the painting is that when you look at it, it creates a three-dimensional image effect. The 650 square meter area of the painting is truly three-dimensional, and there are imitations of cannons, carts, and powder kegs used in the siege. The two-dimensional painting area of 2 thousand 350 square meters is located just behind the three-dimensional area. The figures start at the size of a human and are finely processed in all their details and shrink towards the horizon. And there are about 10 thousand figures in total in the work.

Panoramic museums are usually built to tabulate certain events in history. Most important ones; The Battle of Waterloo Panorama, the Crimean War Panorama describing the Ottoman-Russian War, the Napoleon's Moscow War Panorama, the Pleven Defense Panorama and the Mesdag Panorama. Most of these panoramas were made in the 1800s using the oil painting technique and at the scene of the event. Some are horizontal and some are vertical, half panoramic museums. Panorama 1453 History Museum is full panoramic in both horizontal and vertical planes. The sky extends uninterruptedly in the form of a dome from the top of the picture. In this way, since there are no references to grasp reality and dimensions, and no reference points such as beginning and end, a feeling of going out into a three-dimensional outdoor space is created even though one enters a closed space. Thanks to its panoramic ceiling, sound effects and three-dimensional pieces, it makes its visitors feel the excitement of the conquest of Istanbul every day of the year.

The construction phase

Panorama 1453 History Museum, which was started to be built by Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality in 2005, was completed in 2008.

Panorama 1453 History Museum has emerged as a result of the harmonious work of eight artists that lasted for three consecutive years. The owner of the idea, painter and cartoon director Haşim Citizen, was also the coordinator of the project. Ramazan Erkut (background), Yaşar Zeynalov (painter responsible for figures), Oksana Legka (painter), Ahmet Kaya (storyboard), Hasan H. Dinçer (computer application), Atilla Tunca (model) and Murat Efe (computer application) performed by eight artists.

The first year of study was spent with research. The subject of the painting's conformity with the facts has bothered the artists a lot. Model work in 1/10 scale constituted an important stage, thus deficiencies were identified. After that, a detailed study was carried out in which everything was done from scratch. The intensity of the details has been the subject of discussion among the artists.

Some of the team argued that large amounts of detail would not be visible from 14 meters away, and eventually the artists agreed to include a little too much detail even if it was not visible from 14 meters away. In this way, a visitor will be able to notice a detail that he has not seen before when he comes to the museum at different times. In addition, the cameras that develop with the advancing technology will also help in perceiving the details.
